Hello Starlove,

this is a consideration that must (or can) also be the subject of questioning for astrologers. I prefer not to answer here because it is the subject of another different discussion. It would be nice if you could decide to create this discussion in a new thread (even if you do not intend to participate!), I will be happy to provide an answer. If you prefer to leave it there, I will give you an answer by personal message.

Ecliptique. :)

Sorry for my late reply. I don't visit this forum frequently, but this subject is of great interest for me. I've often wondered where the breakoff latitude is. Where is it that the normal house systems fail. I was intrigued to see that the Russian astrologer was using something similar to my thinking. Ecliptique, have you been in contact with this Russian astrologer?

But still, it can be quite confusing since I also see the other angles/point react to transits... but I must emphasize that IF the polar ASC or Vx or EP should be used as the angles of 1st and 7th houses, then in case of the EP, it makes the POF fall into the same place as the "normal" house systems ASC would be, in early Cancer.

And to answer FraterAC, in my own case the Vx and West point are in the same sign, Libra.

To get any serious practising astrologer to look at this is almost impossible, because the task is huge. All the programs are always using the ASC as the angle of the first house, so for any calculations of other points, that is always the angle being used. And if you use profections to see which whole sign house is being activated, they always count from the ASC. IF however you want to make this type of research you would have to make the astrological programs recognise the EP or Ax as the angle of the first house/wsh.

If you want to contemplate on this matter from a physical possibility, it might help to download Stellarium, the app that allows us to see the sky at the time of birth. When I looked at the stars in Stellarium at the time of my birth, I knew I was onto something by using the sign that is square to the MC. How can it be physically possible to have the ASC in the same sign as the IC and the DSC just a few degress from the MC?

Hello Arena,

no, I am not in contact with the Russian astrologer. It was Edward who pointed it out to me.
I will continue the translations when I have a little more time.

Hello Ecliptique,

I myself am only an intermediate student of Russian language and culture. But as far as I can tell, Russian society in general seems to be pretty open-minded towards astrology and other "esoteric" practices. Many people know their own birth data (at least approximately) and might be willing to share it.

In terms of Russian online forums, the aforementioned ARGO seems to be the go-to place. Then there's VK.com, the "Russian Facebook" where some people gather in groups (public or private) to discuss about astrology.

As for local groups, there's an astrology group in Murmansk called "SIGNS" (ЗНАКИ) with people meeting at regular intervals - you can see some photos here. If anyone happens to have access to a collection of Murmansk nativities, it should be this astrology group. The group is led by Russian astrologer Sergey Sgasinsky (Сергей Згазинский).

Sgasinsky seems to be a local celebrity in Murmansk as he has his own show on "Arctic TV" (Арктик-ТВ), in which random people can ask him for astrological advice. You can collect the birth data of dozens of Arctic nativities even without knowing Russian or how to read Cyrillic. Take a look at this Youtube video for example:

Sgasinsky is examining the nativities of four persons who were born in Murmansk Oblast: "Yu" (at 6:02), "Darya" (8:40), "Tatyana" (19:46) and "Yuliya" (32:55). You can read their birth data from the charts which are displayed publicly on screen. There are several more such videos on Youtube - just search for "ЗНАКИ Згазинский".

Na zdorovye,
Ed

I was trying to understand a little bit into this video with English translation, but I can't see what house system he's using. Do you understand which house system? I can see that he has a mirror image of the setup most of us are used to, so he always has the east on the right side of the chart. But he's not always using the east point to mark the first sign though. If you have insights, please share. :)

As Ecliptique said, Sgasinsky uses MC Equal house system (Russian term is "равнодомная от МС") in which 1st cusp is square to MC and independent from AC. But only for people born beyond the Arctic Circle (66°34'N).

There are also a lot of people calling into his astrology show who were not born in Murmansk Oblast but somewhere south of the Arctic Circle, for example St. Petersburg. For those people Sgasinsky doesn't use MC Equal, but Placidus.

I'm not a fan of translating Sgasinsky's readings from Russian into English and writing them down publically because it feels like breaching into the privacy of the persons whom the natal charts belong to.

Plus, translating those hundreds of 1 hour videos takes a lot of work and I don't expect anyone to do that. If your aim is to become a "polar zone expert", you should try learning Russian for yourself. You can then conduct your own studies with natives from Murmansk and Norilsk.
