Hello,
I live in Florida and have been displaced due to damage to my condo from Hurricane Milton. Our downstairs flooded, we’ve lost all of our furniture and a tree fell on the roof causing a large hole in the second bedroom ceiling. My entire street was pretty much destroyed as well as several other homes in the neighborhood. Part of the issue is that we live next to a large retention pond and 3 of the 5 community pools are right next to us. I’ve always loved the neighborhood because of all of the old oak trees we have but apparently the HOA was advised by an arborist that some needed to be removed and they weren’t. One of my neighbors resigned from the board of directors in 2019 because of the negligence concerning pond maintenance. She is working with my property manager ( I’m a renter) on possibly starting a class action lawsuit against the HOA. She has emails and letters with other board members including the president explaining the necessity in maintaining the pond which they’ve never done. My daughter, dog and I evacuated to another county for the Hurricane so we weren’t there when the storm passed through. Thankfully we weren’t hurt and neither was anyone else, that I know of, in my neighborhood BUT we are all basically homeless now. Most of the neighbors on my street are homeowners, I believe I’m the only renter, they’ve been working day and night on removing drywall, flooring, furniture etc. The demo on my condo was completed last Thursday. The owners approved the $70,000 in repairs this week however the HOA is responsible for the roof and outside of the condo, they’ve removed the tree but haven’t fixed the hole. We’re staying at a hotel for eight days now. We now have to move our bedroom furniture into a storage unit so the contractor can start working on repairs but since the HOA still hasn’t fixed the hole, I’m worried we’re going to be displaced for quite some time. I had a fema inspection yesterday afternoon, I’m still waiting to see my eligibility for everything on the portal. I know I am for sure approved for lodging reimbursement until January but it looks like other items are pending. Any insights? I also had a job interview yesterday with a company my friend works for remotely, the job is mine if I want it, it pays more but I’ll be losing PTO since I’ve been at my current job for eight years now and am accumulating about 14 hrs a month whereas at the new place, I’ll be accumulating about 10 hrs a month for the first 3 yrs. Any advice? The insurance is a little higher as well. Several people including my former Director left the company I work for now to join the company i interviewed with so .. that’s something to consider.
Any thoughts are appreciated
Thanks!
