I know that Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all are or can be associated with complications and things not working out in a completely straightforward way.

In astrological textbooks Neptune is often associated with disappointment. Does this mean disappointments in the general sense, or simply being disappointed as a result of overexpectation or being unrealistic?

I have read one textbook which talks about how Neptune transiting the 9th house may, for university applicants, bring the disappointment of not being accepted by the university of your choice, or Neptune transiting the 10th house may bring the disappointment of a colleague being chosen for promotion rather than yourself. Books often talk about Neptune being associated with disappointments in marriage and love.

Are such experiences more likely with Neptune than with Saturn, Chiron, Uranus or Pluto? Do the other 4 just bring complications and difficulties of a different nature?

I have certainly experienced Neptune transits in terms of confusion, but I am not sure whether I have ever experienced one in terms of disappointments in the general sense. I would be more inclined to associate that with Saturn.

What is your experience of all this?

i think that at all of these planets can bring dissapointment but of a different kind. for example saturn can bring harsh realizations loneliness and sorrow, pluto great loss, uranus sudden changes but pure dissapointment comes from neptune in the sence that you feel that you can never be completely satisfied.everything is good but never as good as you expected, and the great dissapointment comes when you understand that reality can never be as ''divine'' as the fairy tale you secretly long for.

What brings disappointment is expectations. I myself don't associate Neptune with disappointment.

This may seem counter to the free will discipline that is so important when considering astrology, but I tend to take uite a trad view of neptune....I think I have something to say on the topic, with neptune in the 4th suare sun and trine venus, as well as a stellium of planets in the 12th house. Neptune, when it is strong in the natal, is not as simple as (but can include) disappointments due to high expectations. The energy of neptune is like a fog, and those of us "IN" that fog due to strong natal indications will have a great challenge making decisions that involve clarity and "good sense". That is anthema to our nature. So, we often make major life decisions that don't serve our Saturn or Sun, and we don't understand what went so wrong in chasing the fairy dust. On the other hand, a level of awareness of this "fog" can make a lot of difference....just use your mercury (head) to guide you at least as often, and do a lot of mundane tasks...laundry, gardening(!) and yes, even caring for others.....all the little things help to keep you grounded.....

Disappointment involving Neptune perhaps when you realise that things are not the way you thought they were. When the fog of Neptune lifts and you realise that you saw something in a completely different way from the way it really is. And you feel disappointed and perhaps humiliated and humbled that you didn't see that one coming. I've had this a lot lately  and have more than one Neptune transits going on at the moment. The lunar eclipse is also conjunct my natal Neptune. :surprised:

Perhaps what you've been experiencing is due to the eclipse. I've been reading through this article and phrases like these stand out:

19. Eclipses shine the bright light of truth to the part of your chart that is touched by the eclipse. Most of the time, eclipses act as brilliant illuminators, revealing a condition or proclivity that has existed that you had ignored, denied, or never noticed before.

21. Under an eclipse, you may finally see someone's true character. This may be a person you know well, or thought you did. Discovering a dark side to a person can be very disillusioning, but fortunately it won't happen at every eclipse, only rarely.

Most of Neptune's problems come from the fact that Neptune is the planet that rules deception, illusion, fantasy, disillusion, foggy thinking, drugs, alcohol, addictions of every type including behavioral ones, obsessive thinking, blind faith.

If we "create" a false situation in our minds, not backed up by reality, we are bound to be disappointed.

When your disappointment seems to have no explanation, look to Neptune and self deception for the answers.
Neptune is the trickster. His job is to confuse us.

Neptune used positively is found in art, music, fiction. It gives imagination...but it's up to us to know what is real and what is false.

NEPTUNE DEFINITION ‑ KEYWORDS;

Artistic, emotional, sensitive, mediumistic, wandering, sentimental, subtle, deceptive, subversive, imaginative, rhythmic, spirituality, unstable, sacrifice, head in the clouds.

Rules Drugs of all types , alcohol, tobacco, heroin, ether & anaesthetic, Gas lighting. Anything elusive, water has to be put in pipes.
* * * * * *

Wherever your Neptune is, "is where you carry your cross and where you will be called upon to make a sacrifice!".

True sacrifices are never usually recognised, or else they could turn into martyrdom!

Ascendant ‑ sun and mc in pisces ‑ or neptune in the 1st house
rules pituitary gland, feet, and sleeping rhythms. bad aspects may cause sleep disorders, such as insomnia.

All pisceans need an escape route! (think about it, ruled by the twelfth house, the house of isolation, secrets, the unconscious) Pisces generally always seem to answer a question with a question!

I associate Neptune with disillusionment from over-idealization, the cracking of rose-tinted lenses and basically seeing that things were really not what you hoped them to be. Saturn disappointments might involve suffering setbacks that are out of your control, but don't really involve the element of self-deception, which is very much a Neptune thing.

Natally, I have Neptune a few degrees below my descendant. I've become disillusioned by some people in the past not because they misleaded me about how great they were, but because I misleaded myself about how amazing they were or whatever. I guess it's kind of like that. Again, self-deception.

Neptune entered my 9th house a couple months ago, and I think it has manifested as a desire to go abroad and do humanitarian-type things. FWIW, I'm a university student studying this kind of thing. I just hope I'm not being horribly misguided about this.

The thing I've always wondered about Neptune is about how you're supposed to discern true faith and intuition from false thinking and fantasies.

It could depend on which planet or angle Neptune is transitting. Some planets may 'get on' with Neptune more than others. I have had a few big Neptune transits - some were indeed hugely undermining and full of disappointment, others, truly inspiring and liberating in ways I could never have imagined.

Can't speak for others w/strong Neptune, but for me Neptune (conj ASC in 1st house stellium); it is not about direct disappointment, but indirectly an off-shoot of disappointment. Neptune’s nature begs to be one with something greater... like a raindrop in the ocean; boundless. When you don’t see or feel boundaries, it can create confusion & disillusionment; hence.... it feels like disappointment. Perhaps look at your natal or transiting Saturn for on-the-ground basis & structure. lol a prerequisite!

I think Saturn definitely has to do with disappointment as well as Neptune, but following a different path. Under a strong Saturn 'influence' we might put a lot of effort into achieving something, and then if it is not truly right for us we may well either fail, or realise that the achievement is less fulfilling than we thought it would be - disappointing either way. On top of this is the way such disappointments remind us that we feel inadequate and flawed - in other words disappointed with ourselves.

Neptune doesn't strive after things in the way that Saturn does, but it does get its hopes up, and my experience is that both Saturnian and Neptunian disappointments can leave one in a similar place - with no where to stand and needing to re-evaluate things. Perhaps the effects of diappointment depend more on the natal chart than on whether they arose form a Saturnian or Neptunian process.

Although Neptune is not the strongest planet in my chart (Capricorn, 9th house, conjunct Saturn) I find myself a very Neptunian person. I have Sun and Venus in Pisces in 12th house and Mercury in Pisces. I'm not sure about the disappointment, but it is true that confusion and daydreaming is really a part of my life. It is not just lack of rationality, it is really that there is this feeling of longing for "something more" that is constantly present. I guess that the area where it manifests itself most is love. Every time I fall in love I find myself idealizing the other person, thinking how wonderful he is and that I could nevar be good enough for him. It is not always a negative feeling, It is sometimes like a happiness because there is someone so divine in the world. However I've never had any real relationship with those people. I know that if I had, I would probably realize that they are not as divine as I thought, but I've never got the chance. So, I'd rather say that Neptune energy has manifested in my life as constant longing for something more than I have. Yes, maybe disappointment in love because I have never got close to the people I've fallen in love with. And there have been many situations in my life when I realize how imaginary all my notions about something have been. So it seems to me that Neptune is really kind of dreaming planet.

In my experience this is very true, especially applied to relationships. [Pisces Sun opp Saturn conj MC, with Sun square Neptune]
(Yes, that's kind of like being in disagreement with yourself..about yourself..and your place in life or others lives .)

Being continually disappointed by life itself and/or others you choose to align yourself with, along with those you are attached to by default (i.e., family), can be highly damaging to self-esteem and self-actualization. When all your hopes and efforts seem to only be horribly dashed in the end, time after time, person after person..it can erupt as a crisis of faith so to speak [Neptune in 1st/Sag rising/Jupiter conj Mars/NN, square Asc] and leave you completely unsure of what or who to believe in..not knowing what is solid or real anymore..outside of yourself.

You know yourself but other people are a completely different story, when time and again you are shown that you can't put stock in what you are told/professed, you shouldn't follow what you are led to feel/believe, as doing so just unravels in the end with the realization of both your own self-deception in rose-coloured situations, and/or with another's poor choice of hijacking your regard/energy/time for their selfish entertainment/schemes.

On my particular dim-lit path, going through such experiences has served to intensify my alignment with a higher spiritual power/religious figure, as sometimes (or most times..) that's the only support there is (whether or not you are aware of it at the time) besides your own, but I can't say if everyone would experience severe disappointment the same kind of way with Neptune and Saturn aspects, or with a similar kind of personal fortitude [Saturn/Sun] to persevere no matter what [deep-rooted earth Venus tenacity & strong fire Mars drive] and just keep on keepin' on [absolute Sag optimism]..dragging all your macerated parts (that you can barely recognize as still being yours) behind you.
Maybe this involves some Plutonian transformational aspects/transits as well, I dunno.

Hi Cosmicblyss. It sounds like its a good thing you have that alignment with a higher power, else things could have been pretty overwhelming. A friend of mine has Moon in Pisces opposition Saturn in Virgo in the first house, both making a T square with Neptune. He's suffered a lot, but also has beliefs that help to sustain him. I don't find Saturn Neptune aspects (or similar interchanges like Pisces planets aspecting Saturn) easy to interpret - although I have a strong Saturn, My Neptune is conjunct Jupiter and doesn't aspect Saturn at all. So it was useful to read your post - thanks.
